One of Andrew Wyeth’s early tempera paintings, it depicts his friend Walt Anderson, back turned to the viewer, walking across a field in Port Clyde. Absent of any dramatic effects or readily visible narrative, it focuses on this lone figure, conveying a sense of loneliness. His father, N.C., suggested Andrew add a dog or perhaps a hunting rifle to give the picture more visual interest, but by this time Andrew had already established his own path that diverged from the illustrator’s approach that his father so successfully mastered.
